Initial HSR Training (individual learning on line)
Course Outline
This online course equips HSRs with the skills to promote a safer and healthier place of work and also covers Unit Standard 29315 “Describe the role and functions of the Health and Safety Representative in a NZ workplace”. Successful completion of US 29315 (via the assessed quiz and fillable PIN) allows an HSR to exercise their powers to issue provisional improvement notices (PINs) and direct unsafe work to cease.
Although this course is completed fully online, under the Health and Safety at Work Regulation’s 2016 learners are entitled to two (2) days paid leave to complete the training. Link to the legislation here.
Ongoing Support
You will have ongoing access to one of WorksafeReps experienced iQualify trainers.
Workload
It is expected you will take approximately 20 hours to complete the course. This includes readings and activities.

Training for managers (online)
Course Outline
This online course equips Managers/Supervisors/Team Leaders with the skills to promote a safer and healthier place of work. This course is completed fully online, however, there is no assessment requirements. There are readings, activities and feedback requirements, and we estimate that the course will take you approximately 8-10 hours to complete over the course of one month.
Introduction – Aim of this course
The aim of this course is to provide officers (as defined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015), managers and supervisors with skills, knowledge and competency that will assist them to:
provide workplace health and safety leadership
comply with their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015)
engage with health and safety representatives and workers when making decisions about health and safety
develop and implement health and safety policies, procedures and systems to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.

De-escalation Workshop
Course Outline
This half-day online workshop comprises of three sessions aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of the principles of de-escalation, how to de-escalate confrontational and derogatory situations and be provided with practical tips and strategies to take away. These online workshops can be delivered via MS Teams or Zoom.
This workshop is targeted at frontline and call centre workers who are dealing with the public either by phone or in a controlled environment i.e., reception area The content of this workshop has been designed to give the learner a foundational knowledge and understanding of de-escalation techniques.
This workshop is not aimed at workers who may have to deal with physical aggression, threatening clients in an uncontrolled environment.

By attending this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Understand the definitions of de-escalation.
- Understand how to review legislation and how it relates to de-escalation.
- Understand the science and research around de-escalation and become aware of how you may react in these situations such as anger, frustration, and stress.
- Recognise verbal cues and flags being displayed by customers who are becoming agitated, angry, or stressed.
- How to handle, take control and de-escalate any confrontational, derogatory, or intimidating phone calls or in-person situations.
- Understand how and when to disengage from a confrontational call or situation.
- Practical tips and strategies to use in your work environment and share with colleagues using the HEAT and AWOCA models of de-escalation.
- Recognise when you or your colleagues need further support following a confrontation or call and know what to do about it.
Preventing and Managing Fatigue H&S Training
Course Outline
Physical and mental fatigue are hazards that effect a person’s ability to work safely.
Fatigue reduces alertness and can lead to errors and an increase in incidents and injuries.
This course explores:
- The causes of fatigue and impact on workplace health and safety;
- Sleep science including the relationship between fatigue and sleep and implications for shift work;
- Understanding the legislative duty to manage the hazard of fatigue;
- Taking a risk management approach to managing fatigue;
- Tools and templates for introducing or improving a fatigue risk management system.
Creating Positive Workplaces
After working through this course, participants will be able to:
- identify features of proactive, respectful workplace cultures;
- identify negative features of workplaces;
- explain bullying and harassment definitions;
- review legislation and duties in relation to bullying and harassment;
- identify clear roles and responsibilities when workplace bullying or harassment occurs;
- explore the stages of working through a workplace bullying incident as a health and safety representative;
- understand howHealth and Safety Reps can support workers when unacceptable behaviour incidents occur;
- use a risk management approach to build a positive workplace;
- plan actions to create proactive, respectful workplace cultures.
